Murio ODETTA el 2 de diciembre

Odetta 12/31/1930-12/2/2008: It is with great sadness that we write about the passing of Odetta Holmes. Known in the circles of blues, spirituals, and folk, as well as being a beacon for the civil rights movement, Odetta was one of the most memorable musical personalities to emerge from the 1960s. She died of a heart attack on December 2, 2008 after being hospitalized for kidney failure. She was 77. Odetta was born on December 31, 1930, and at age 3, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother where she started singing and playing guitar. She earned a music degree from Los Angeles City College, focusing on musicals and classical, but her real love was the expressiveness of folk songs and spirituals. While working in the West Coast theater circuit, she found her way to the then emerging San Francisco folk scene, where she felt right at home. She made her first record, Odetta Sings Ballads & Blues, of which Bob Dylan stated in a 1978 interview with Playboy, was "The first thing that turned me on to folk singing". She recorded several albums during the 1960s, and became perhaps the most prominent musical voice in the civil rights movement, highlighted by a famous performance of the song "Oh Freedom" at the August 1963 March On Washington. She married three times, with one of her husbands being Louisiana Red, whom she wed in 1977. In recent years, her career was revitalized by her recorded work with Mark Carpentieri's MC Records. She recorded three CDs for MC, which earned her a W.C. Handy Award nomination (now called Blues Music Awards) and two Grammy® nominations. In 1999, Odetta was awarded the National Medal of the Arts and Humanities by President Clinton. In 2003, the Library Of Congress presented her with a Living Legend Award. She was a great musician and a kind and insightful person with a purposefulness to all her actions. God bless Odetta. Henry Gray

Bio
Henry Gray was born on January 19, 1925 in Kenner, Louisiana, an outskirt of New Orleans. Within a few years his family moved to a small farm in Alsen, Louisiana a few miles north of Baton Rouge. It was here that Gray began to demonstrate his talent on the piano at the age of eight.

He was exposed to the piano through church, the radio and records, and an elderly woman in his neighborhood, Mrs. White. She recognized Henry's interest and gave him lessons. He began playing piano and organ in the local church. Eventually, Henry's family acquired a piano in their home.

Yet, as with many families, the blues was not allowed to be played on the piano at home, so Henry had to sneak around and play the blues where he could. Fortunately, Mrs. White encouraged Henry to play the blues at her house.

At the age of sixteen, Henry was asked to play with a band at a club near his home in Alsen. He gathered the courage to tell his father. To Henry's surprise, his father agreed, but only if Henry was accompanied by his father. Henry played the gig and made some money. As Henry tells it, "When my father saw that I could make money playing the blues, he liked that all right!"

It was this event, that gave birth to Henry Gray's remarkable sixty year career in the history of the Blues.

Henry served several years in the army during World War II in the south Pacific. On a many of occasions, Henry entertained troops with a piano and his singing. He fondly recalls those moments as they were breaks from the stress of being a war-time soldier.

Shortly before the war was over, Henry was given a medical discharge from the army. He returned to his family's home in Alsen for a short period before leaving to go to Chicago where he had relatives.

Soon after arriving in Chicago in 1946, Henry began frequenting the clubs and joints checking out the piano players and measuring his skills and talents with theirs. At times, he would sit in a play in some of the places.

While doing this, Henry caught the eyes and ears of Big Maceo Merriwether, who is considered one of the best blues and barrel house piano players in history. Maceo was born in Detroit but had moved to Chicago to make money playing the piano. Merriwether mentored Henry and showed him the ropes in the blues scene in Chicago.

It wasn't long before Henry was being sought after for his abilities. For the next twenty-two years, Henry played and/or recorded with many notable players and innovators of the blues.

In 1956, Howlin' Wolf asked Henry to join his band. Henry did and remained Wolf's main piano player until 1968. This is evidenced on many of Wolf's recording during this time. During the fifties and sixties, Chess records employed Henry many times as side man on their recordings. Also, he can be heard on many of J. D. Miller's Louisiana Excello blues recordings in the fifties and sixties.

The following is a list of blues artists that Henry has worked and/or recorded with in his career: Robert Lockwood Jr., Billy Boy Arnold, Morris Pejoe, Muddy Waters, Johnny Shines, Abe Locke, Hubert Sumlin, Lazy Lester, "Little" Walter Jacobs, Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller), "Homesick" James, Jimmy Reed ( including a Carnegie Hall concert), Jimmy Rogers, Elmore James (with him the night he died), "Snooky" Pryor, Koko Taylor, Otis Rush, "Little" Milton, James Cotton, Buddy Guy, Raful Neal, Kenny Neal, Taj Mahal, BB King, Tabby Thomas, Larry Garner, Moses "Whisperin" Smith, Silas Hogan, Guitar Kelly, Washboard Sam, and Guitar Slim. This list in not complete but it gives one the idea of the prolific and vital history of Henry's accomplishments.

Henry left Wolf's band and Chicago in 1968 to return to Alsen, due to the death of his father and to assist his mother with a family fish market business.

Since 1968, many have wondered what Henry has been doing. He worked with the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board as roofer for nearly fifteen years before retiring, helped raise a family with his wife Rivers Gray for the last thirty years, and remained active as a musician in a number of ways.

During the last thirty years, Henry has been performed at virtually all New Orleans Jazz Festivals, two Chicago Blues festivals (1987 & (1989), the Montreal Jazz Fest (1988), nearly every Baton Rouge Blues Festival since its inception, the San Francisco Blues Festival, Memphis's W.C. Handy Blues Festival Blues Festival, several Festival Internationals (Lafayette, Louisiana), the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, the King Biscuit festival (Helena, Arkansas), and many other festivals around the United States.

Also, Henry has travelled to Europe to play festivals and concerts regularly during this time. He is on several European releases with several bands. Henry can be found playing occassionally at Blind Willies in Atlanta, Georgia, the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, Arizona, Tabby's Thomas' Blues Box and Abe's Barbecue in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 1988, Blind Pig Records released Henry's first stateside feature LP entitled "Lucky Man."

More recently, Henry received a Grammy nomination for his work on TelArc Records' 1998 release "A Tribute to Howlin' Wolf". Also, Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones paid homage to Henry by having him play at Jagger's 55th birthday bash in Paris in '98 along with a few other blues legends. In the summer of '99, Henry joined Marva Wright and her band for a 30-day Louisiana music European tour produced by Blue House Records. Finally, Henry Gray and the Cats will continue "keepin' the blues alive" according to God's plan. Support the blues! Peace.

Nueva produccion de Delta Groove - CEDRIC BURNSIDE & LIGHTNIN' MALCOLM

Gacetilla de prensa

CEDRIC BURNSIDE & LIGHTNIN' MALCOLM
"2 MAN WRECKING CREW"

“Once in a while you witness a birth in this business. A kind of unawareness to the fact that there are other sounds to be heard that you haven’t yet discovered, or dialects and music that is still being invented. That is precisely the sound you hear from this Mississippi duo.”
– Bluessource.com
"Cedric & Malcolm are the next generation of amazing Blues with this duo’s swagger, intensity, and the way they make the crowd get up and start rockin’ out to their explosive sound." - Blues Web Radio
"Burnside & Malcolm have hit on a sound that takes the spirit of the blues breaking it down and adding some of their own intriguing twists." - The Charleston Gazette
CEDRIC BURNSIDE, grandson of the legendary R.L. Burnside and son of drummer great Calvin Jackson, is widely regarded as one of the best drummers in the world. Growing up at his grandfather’s side, he began touring at age 13, playing drums for “Big Daddy” on stages around the globe. Cedric was born in 1978 and raised around Holly Springs, Mississippi, and has been playing music all his life, developing a relentless, highly rhythmic charged style with strong hip-hop and funk influences. An equally adept songwriter and surprisingly powerful vocalist, Cedric brings new life and energy to the Blues.

Guitarist LIGHTNIN’ MALCOLM was born in 1974 in rural Missouri, and enjoyed the freedom of country life, quickly learning to entertain himself and others around him. Growing up in a little village called Burgess in a country house next to the KCS Railroad that ran from Kansas City to New Orleans, the train has always been a theme in Malcolm’s music, as well as the inspiration for the steady, insistent bass rhythms of rural dance music. Skilled on guitar, bass, and drums, Malcolm is an in demand session player with a telepathic sense of how to follow the older archaic styles.

Over the years the two have made friends and worked with the some of the very best Mississippi Blues legends including Cedell Davis, R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, T-Model Ford, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Big Jack Johnson, Sam Carr, Otha Turner, Robert Belfour and Hubert Sumlin, in addition to the younger generation of musicians including the North Mississippi All-Stars. Together Cedric Burnside and Lightnin’ Malcolm have crafted a sound reminiscent of such minimalist rock duos as The Black Keys and The White Stripes, while still retaining a sound uniquely their own by featuring original music, drums, guitar and dual vocal harmonies, and fusing Soul, Hip-Hop, and Funk with electrifying Blues power that's contemporary and traditional all at the same time. So prepare yourself… and get ready for an authentically swampy and raggedly stomping juke joint affair that is deeply rooted in the rich musical legacy of the Mississippi hill country blues of the Delta. It’s old school, but it’s got that beat and electricity that’s gonna make you move!

RIP Phil Guy 4/28/1940-8/20/2008: This news form Steve Hecht of Piedmont Talent and Buddy Guy's Legends: Guitarist/vocalist Phil Guy, the younger brother of the legendary Buddy Guy, passed away today at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, IL, after a battle with kidney and liver cancer. He was 68. Born April 28, 1940 in Lettsworth, Louisiana, Phil learned to play guitar as a child. He followed in Buddy's footsteps, playing after him with Baton Rouge artists Big Poppa and Raful Neal. He recorded as accompanist for his brother in 1957, for Raful Neal around 1958, and for Slim Harpo in the mid-60s. He joined his brother's band in Chicago in 1969, and has been based there ever since. He has worked and recorded with many of the city's leading artists, such as his brother, Junior Wells, Byther Smith, and Jimmy Dawkins. Phil began focusing his efforts on advancing his own musical career during the 80's and he developed a solid reputation as a tough, electrified Chicago blues guitarist. He toured all around the world; and though he never achieved the fame or recognition that his brother did, he was considered a star in his own right. His recordings are numerous and appear on labels such as JSP, Wolf, Isabel, and Red Lightning. Memorial info forthcoming.

Murio Little Arthur Duncan 1934-2008

Un grande de la armónica de Chicago

RIP Little Arthur Duncan 2/5/1934-8/20/2008: It is with great sadness that we report yet another passing in this terrible week of losses to our blues community. Chicago harmonica ace Little Arthur Duncan passed away Wednesday morning, August 20, 2008 at Kindred Hospital in Northlake, IL. He was 74. He had been incapacitated for months with little hope of recovery. Born February 5, 1934 in Indianola, Mississippi, Arthur moved to Chicago at age 16, where he heard and befriended Little Walter, who inspired him to take up the harmonica. While holding down a construction day job, he began performing around Chicago with John Brim, Floyd Jones, and Hip Lankchan. He would later own and operate the Artesia Lounge on Lake Street, which moved to West Madison Street and reopened as Backscratcher's Social Club. Owning a club gave Arthur a regular place to perform, and he became a popular neighborhood attraction on the West Side. Twist Turner produced some of Arthur's first recordings, which appeared first on cassette and then on Cannonball Records' Blues Across America series. As Arthur's stature grew in Chicago, he recorded more, cutting two beautiful CDs for Delmark (Singin' With The Sun and Live At Rosa's Blues Lounge), and one for Random Chance (Live In Chicago). He was a simply great vocalist, with tremendous power and expressiveness; and his sparse harmonica was always on the money. He specialized in third position and chromatic harmonica. His final band included Illinois Slim, Rick Kreher, and Twist Turner. He had a warm and gracious personality, and his passing leaves a huge hole in the Chicago blues scene, as he was one of a handful of the dwindling old school harmonica masters. We will miss you, Arthur.

Isaac Hayes 8/20/1942-8/10/2008

RIP Isaac Hayes 8/20/1942-8/10/2008: Another great has left us: soul legend Isaac Hayes passed away today at 2:08 this morning. He was 65. A fixture of the City of Memphis, Hayes was best known for his hits “Hot Buttered Soul”, “The Theme from Shaft”, and “Black Moses”. He was a three-time Grammy® award winner (two for "Shaft” and one for “Black Moses”). He was a crucial part of Stax Records, serving not only as a star, but as a behind-the-scenes writer, arranger, and musician. He crafted songs for Otis Redding and Sam and Dave during his Stax tenure. In later years, he was well known as the voice of Chef in the animated TV show South Park, but left the show after it made a parody of Scientology, which was his religion. Sista Monica Parker - LA LEONA DEL BLUES

En 1995, Monica lanzó su CD debut, Get Out Of My Way!.

Big Bad Smitty

Bio:
John H. Smith was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi 2-11-40, and raised in the tiny delta town of Schlater, (pronounced "slaughter!") Mississippi. When he was ten his father bought a guitar for Smitty's older brother Nelson, and Smitty would play it when no one was around. The first song he learned was Muddy Waters' "Still a Fool."
By his mid teens he was gigging in the Greenville area with his schoolmate, Roosevelt "Booba" Barnes. The pair would play picnics, jukes and fishfries.
By his twenties he had moved to Jackson, Mississippi and took up truckdriving. In the fertile Jackson blues scene of the fifties Smitty played regularly with artists including John Littlejohn, Sam Myers, King Edward and King Mose at clubs such as The Queen of Hearts and Sammy Lee's on Livingston. He was recorded at this time by Johnny Vincent of Ace Records whose most famous artists included Frankie "Sea Cruise" Ford, and Huey "Piano" Smith of "Rockin' Pneumonia and Boogie Woogie Blues" fame. Two of these cuts, "Smokestack Lightnin'" and "How Many More Years" appeared on the Ace 1970 anthology Genuine Mississippi Blues alongside cuts by such greats as Fred McDowell, Littlejohn, Myers, Frankie Lee Sims and Elmore James Jr. on whose cuts Smitty played lead guitar. This album was recently reissued on CD and on the James cuts you can hear James say "take it Smitty" before the solos.
By his thirties Smitty had moved north to St. Louis. There he became lead guitar player for Big George (Brock) and the Houserockers at George's Club Caravan and followed by a stint with Little Weaver & The Dynamite. After a return to Mississippi he took up residence at Spraggins Hacienda Lounge leading his own band, Big Bad Smitty and the Upsetters. In the eighties he recorded an album for the JCE label entitled St. Louis On A HIgh Hill which was marred by terrible sound and saw little distribution, but is now reissued on Wolf CD 120.942 St. Louis Blues Today Vol 2.
In 1991 he recorded the album Mean Disposition released on the Black Magic label in Europe, the GENES label in the US and on AIM Records in Australia. Press reaction was extremely favorable. Blues and Rhythm: The Gospel Truth ran the Joel Slotnikoff interview with Smitty. Block Magazine in Holland and Il Blues in Italy have run that interview and put Smitty on their covers. The June '93 Living Blues features Smitty on the cover and a Bill Greensmith interview inside.
Smitty made his European debut at the prestigious Blues Estafette in Utrecht, Holland and in 1992 toured Switzerland and Italy for 18 days highlighted by appearances at the Festa New Orleans en Ascona and the Ravenna Blues Festival. He appeared on the Robert Johnson Memorial Blues Festival, and played U.S. clubs such as Blind Willie's in Atlanta, the Grand Emporium in Kansas City and Rumboogie Cafe in Memphis.
1993 saw a 26 day tour of Switzerland, Italy and Germany as well as appearances at the Burnley National Blues Festival in England, the Chicago Blues Festival, the Handzame Blues Festival in Belgium and the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas.
Big Bad Smitty first ran into legendary Howlin' Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin at the Burnley Festival and the chemistry between them was powerful. On first seeing Smitty Sumlin exclaimed "It's the Wolf!." Sumlin was once again in his element with a singer who has the power to do the classic Wolf numbers and who knows them all! Hubert sang some, but seemed most content standing back by his amp playing his guitar like he used to do with Wolf. Blueprint Magazine in England put them on its cover. They have since appeared together at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis and at the King Biscuit Festival.
With bandmates Bennie Smith, one of the finest guitarists on the planet, and Arthur Williams, one of the few remaining authentic Mississippi harmonica players, Big Bad Smitty is a blues artist of great power and authenticity. He plays the blues in the solid tradition of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Lightnin' Hopkins.
After his appearance at the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival in Moline, Iowa in 1993, and a 1994 trip to the 5th Annual International East Coast Blues Festival in Byron Bay, Australia, Smitty suffered two strokes. After recuperating he made his first public appearance at the Dusk 'til Dawn Festival in Checoteh, OK over the Labor Day Weekend. He then returned to St. Louis for a surprise guest appearance at the St. Louis Blues and Heritage Festival.
In 1997 Smitty's Cold Blood CD (with special guest Hubert Sumlin) was released on HMG and in 2000 Unwired Roots with Arthur Williams and Tom Hall was released on Amphion.
On April 3, 2002, Big Bad Smitty, after a dificult battle with diabetes, passed away in Jackson, Mississippi.
